Teaching Toolkit Workshops
Teaching Toolkit Workshops are specifically designed for BSPH faculty and teaching assistants. These workshops occur throughout the academic year and feature numerous topics including best pedagogical practices for teaching graduate-level students plus training in various educational technologies.
CoursePlus Refresher Training
Sometime around the start of the academic term, CTL offers an hour-long CoursePlus Refresher Training. The session is geared especially toward Teaching Assistants, though all are welcome. The goal of the (in-person) workshop is to provide an overview of some of the tools in CoursePlus, focusing on those TAs ask about most frequently. Up-to-date information on upcoming dates, times, and locations for this Toolkit session is available on the events calendar (above).
A lot is covered in the hour, so a basic familiarity with the administrative view of CoursePlus (including navigating in Faculty Tools) is highly recommended before attending the session. If someone is looking for a personal, first-time tour of the BSPH course management system, we recommend they enroll in the TA training course or make an appointment with one of the IDs.
While we encourage synchronous attendance -- where you have the opportunity to have your personal questions addressed, we also have some on-demand videos of past training.
LiveTalk Training
Historically, CTL regularly offered synchronous LiveTalk training for faculty and TAs new to facilitating the synchronous, online class session. (Learn more about LiveTalks here.) This training happened at the start of each term, but as expertise and comfort increased with hosting a Zoom session and managing recordings, we decided to change our approach.
The training – beneficial for online, blended, and hybrid course instruction, as well as those working in a pivoted virtual class session in the event of campus closure – is now a stand-alone, on-demand recording. As the Zoom interface and options change often, we aim to update this recording semi-annually as a part of the CTL Exemplars and Best Practice site for faculty inside CoursePlus. Additionally, instructional teams can submit a request to CTL Help for one-on-one training.
Currently, we invite you to view the last of our synchronous sessions. This was recorded prior to first term, AY25-26. We anticipate a new stand-alone training to replace this in the spring semester.

Picnic PD Annual Summer Workshop Series
JHU faculty, teaching assistants, and academic staff are invited to attend CTL’s annual Picnic PD (professional development) summer series. Every year, our instructional designers craft a relevant theme that weaves through our series of interactive workshops. These workshops focus on practical tips and strategies around effective teaching, learning, course development, and technology. Learn more about this year's Picnic PD.
